Health Disparities

Addressing Inequities in
Health Care and Medicine

Public Health in Action:
Health disparities

This inaugural issue of The Science Writer was written, edited, and designed by students in the 2021 “Public Health in Action” residency course. Over the summer, we engaged in local reporting to tell stories of health disparities throughout the US and several other countries.

The issue highlights six categories: cancer, environmental health, food insecurity, hidden inequities, maternal and child health, and technology. We used news and feature writing, opinion pieces, essays, and solutions journalism in our storytelling. In addition to writing stories, we learned about the craft of science writing and the promotion of health equity from renowned guest journalists and public health leaders. We hope we captured the very human stories of health disparities and highlighted possible solutions.
